Committee members extend congratulations

By Paul Minnis
Reporter

Columbus in Bloom members who led the city to victory in the America in Bloom national contest extended and accepted congratulations in a packed City Council meeting Tuesday.

Mayor Fred Armstrong, who accepted the award on the group's behalf Saturday in Eureka Springs, Ark., tossed green T-shirts with CIB logos into the audience from his front seat.

Many audience members wore the T-shirts, while people took turns extending accolades to CIB members and the community.

America in Bloom representatives judged the community June 22 and 23 on eight community beautification categories.

Columbus scored 941 out of a possible 1,000 points, 23 more than second-place Ocala, Fla., in the 25,000 to 50,000-population bracket.

Armstrong said the victory margin was enough to be considered a "pretty good whooppin'."

CIB Co-Chairman Jim Dietz praised his partners and the community for making the win a reality.

He said the victory belongs to everyone.

This was the first year Columbus participated in America in Bloom.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Mayor Fred L. Armstrong

Bravo Columbus In Bloom.  WE WON!

A portion of our scoring summary read: “with so many criteria in Columbus being outstanding, it is hard to pick one that is tops, yet that is arguably the community involvement and volunteerism of the citizens.”  “…this is a common thread linking all other criteria”.

Thank you for a job well done:  Columbus In Bloom volunteers, Irwin Management, Clifty Creek Watershed Project staff, The Republic, Tipton Lakes Community Association, Bartholomew County Solid Waste Management District, Bartholomew County Historical Society, Columbus Visitors Center staff and volunteers, Bartholomew County Extension Office, Master Gardeners, Jim Ogilvie, Alan VanNahmen of Land Logos, Elsbury’s Greenhouses, Smith’s Row Restaurant, Rick and Sharon Pease, Howard and Carolyn Lickerman, RTO, Engledow Group, Cummins, Inc., ArvinMeritor, Hospice Inpatient Facility, BCSC, Columbus Fire Department, Columbus Parks and Recreation, Community Development staff, City Engineer staff, City Garage crews, Columbus City Utility staff, area businesses, Columbus residents and all directly or indirectly involved with Columbus IN Bloom.

Because of your determination and good work, Columbus was already a winner.  Receiving national recognition from America In Bloom is simply the icing on the cake.

Congratulations.

To those who represented Columbus in Eureka Springs, Arkansas:  John and Judy Lemley, Gordon and Nancy Elsbury, Chuck and Geri Wilt, Nick Rush, Becky Church, Jim Dietz, Doty Harvey, Casey Ritz, Judy Johns Jackson, Sandy Hummel, Lynn Lucas and Cindy Frey, you exemplified the pride and passion in our commUNITY.

Thank you all for a job well done.

Mayor Fred L. Armstrong
