Mayor’s Workplace Challenge Encourages Healthy Lifestyle

Mayor Kristen Brown has challenged City of Columbus employees to be healthier and more active by training for and participating in the Mill Race Marathon or associated races this year. Mayor Brown encourages other employers to join her in supporting healthier lifestyles for their employees by using the Mill Race Marathon as a motivating catalyst.

The Mayor’s Workplace Challenge promotes the significant health benefits of participating in the Mill Race Marathon, half marathon or 5K by setting a goal of walking or running one of the races and taking advantage of free training provided by Patrick Pierz and other encouraging and enthusiastic members of the Columbus Running Club.

“The races serve as a motivating catalyst for so many of us in the community to get more active and healthier,” Mayor Kristen Brown said. “Our paths and sidewalks were full of walkers and joggers for months leading up to the event last year, and we anticipate even more participation by the community this year. The City of Columbus is fielding a team to show the community that we really do ‘run’ this city and to encourage others to join us in setting a goal to improve their health.”

City department heads will be tracking City employee participation and training miles as friendly and supportive motivation. Mayor Brown encourages other employers to form employee teams and track miles to support healthy activities at their workplaces. Those unable to attend training sessions or run in the races can still join the challenge by following the training schedule and tracking their miles.

The Columbus Running Club training, presented by Patrick Pierz, is designed for beginners and addresses the full spectrum of abilities from those with a goal of walking the 5K to those with a goal of running the full marathon. The free training sessions will be held at 7:00 a.m. every Saturday at YES Cinema beginning on June 7 through the 17 weeks leading up to race day.

This year’s Mill Race Marathon is scheduled for September 27. Employers interested in joining the Mayor’s Workplace Challenge can email Patrick Pierz at
