Shoplifting Suspect with 15 Knives and Hatchet Arrested

A Batesville, Indiana man is in custody after he allegedly stole several knives and a hatchet from a west side store and resisted arrest on Sunday afternoon.  At approximately 2:50 p.m., Columbus Police Sergeant Ben Goodin was dispatched to Menards located at 2351 Merchants Mile in regards to a shoplifting suspect that was inside the store stealing knives.  When the suspect, Richard L. Peetz, 44, exited the store he refused to stop for store security and began walking towards the parking lot with his hands in his jacket pockets.  Sgt. Goodin gave Peetz several commands to remove his hands from his pockets, however, he removed only his left hand.  After two additional commands were given and Peetz refused to remove his right hand, Sgt. Goodin deployed his Taser striking Peetz.  As Peetz kneeled over, officers observed a large hatchet sticking out of the back of his pants.  After Peetz was handcuffed, officers recovered a total of 15 knives, 12 of which had been stolen from the store.  Peetz was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail on the following preliminary charges:
