The Columbus Police Department along with other local law enforcement honored officers killed in the line of duty across the nation last year during a ceremony Thursday, May 16, at the Public Safety Plaza.

No Columbus police officer has ever been killed in the line of duty. However, 120 law enforcement officers in the United States died in 2012 while serving their communities or states, including two from Indiana. Two K-9 police dogs in Indiana also died in the line of duty last year.

“Our officers put their lives on the line every day to serve and protect us. Fortunately, we have not lost an officer on duty in our community,” Mayor Kristen Brown said. “The dangers of their job are very real with constant threats, and we are extremely grateful for the services they provide to keep our residents safe.”

The ceremony featured a presentation by the Columbus Police Department Honor Guard and local bagpipers and drummers. Mayor Brown provided opening remarks, and local officers read the names of all 120 law enforcement personnel killed while serving last year. The ceremony closed with the firing of three honorary volleys.
