Columbus, IN – On Friday, May 10, the Heritage Fund Board of Directors pleasantly surprised Mike Richardson, the previous Columbus Police Chief, by presenting him with the Donald W. and Catherine G. Jurgemeyer Community Hero Award. This award recognizes and celebrates the contributions of everyday local heroes; those who have performed life-saving measures, come to the aid of another, or contributed to the safety, security and resiliency of our community. Mayor Mary Ferdon noted, “Chief Richardson has always displayed the characteristics of what we want in our law enforcement professionals. He’s caring, listens well, displays a willingness to learn and make changes, puts others above self and has sacrificed over the years to always put community first. We’re so proud that Heritage Fund is honoring him by recognizing all the work he’s done for Columbus over the past two decades.
To be nominated for the award, a person must be either a professional or volunteer serving in Bartholomew County as a law enforcement official, fire fighter, first responder or in the medical or healthcare field. The nominee will have exhibited heroism in their response to an emergency, on or off-duty, or is involved in an ongoing activity in which a commitment is made to the safety, security and resiliency of the community through acts of courage and unselfishness in response to an identified need.
Mike Richardson was humbled and grateful for the recognition he received from the Heritage Fund Board of Directors. Throughout his tenure as Columbus Police Chief, he dedicated his life to serving and protecting the community. Current Columbus Police Chief Steve Norman stated, “It was so great to see Mike Richardson receive the Donald W. & Catherine G. Jurgemeyer Community Hero Award. Mike has dedicated his life to the safety of the community and sacrificed so much over his career. I couldn’t think of a more deserving person for the title of hero.”
