Columbus, IN – The city of Columbus is pleased to announce the appointment of Paul W. Smith as the Assistant Director of Community Development. Smith brings a wealth of experience, having served in various capacities such as a Director of Operations in the private sector, Community Liaison in the Office of Community and Rural Affairs for the State of Indiana and as the Chief People Officer leading a team of over 400 individuals during his tenure in the U.S. Navy. His background encompasses operational, managerial, and compliance expertise from both public and private sectors.

As the Assistant Director of Community Development, Smith’s key responsibilities include overseeing the city’s Affordable Housing study project, supporting the Director in managing the Community Development Block Grant funding, supervising upcoming affordable housing initiatives, coordinating the Community Homeless Initiative to foster relationships with downtown stakeholders, contributing to Ethnic Expo activities, facilitating economic development via the tax abatement process, aiding in code enforcement supervision, and engaging in various community events. Smith will operate under the leadership of Robin Hilber, the Director of Community Development. Hilber stated, “”We are thrilled to have Paul join our team. His knowledge and background match our goals seamlessly, and we are excited to proceed with various projects to enhance the community further.”

Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marian University and a Master of Business Administration from Anderson University. In his leisure time, he contributes to the YMCA as a member of the Veterans Engagement Committee. He and his wife, Kristin, currently reside in Greenwood with their children.
